Foreign language at GHS

Available Options

Granger High School currently offers both Spanish and German at course levels I-III. American Sign Language and Czech are occasionally offered as off-campus subjects, but they are not on offer this year. Mr. Möller is in charge of the entire programs for both on-campus languages.

Graduation Requirements

Texas state law requires two years of foreign language credit for graduation from the high school level. A third year is not required for graduation, though some universities set it as an additional admissions requirement; also, many universities will consider a third year of high-school foreign language to exempt a student from foreign language at the college level.

Students with an IEP may have exemption from second-year foreign language as an element of their plan.

Credit Recovery

Students who have taken and failed a foreign language course may be eligible to complete the course online via the credit-recovery program. Credit recovery is self-paced and does not include speaking or listening elements, unlike in-person classes; it may therefore be inadequate to prepare a student for second-year foreign language study, and is strongly discouraged to first-year foreign language students. District policy dictates that credit recovery is only available to those who have taken a course and failed it; therefore, to be eligible for credit recovery, a student must have sat for both semesters of a course (or else have obtained a policy exemption from the superintendent of schools).

If a student has taken and failed a foreign-language course and wishes to pursue the credit-recovery option, the appropriate person to contact is the school registrar; Mr. Möller can make recommendations but does not have the authority to put students in credit recovery.
