Things I Learned in Florida (the members)
National Meeting Attendees
July 23, 2008
The following comments are personal views of the students that attended the 2008 National FCCLA Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Thank you, Granger, and surrounding communities for supporting this leadership experience for these students. - Linda Huebner
Alyssa Blomquist (7th grade): This was my first airplane ride. I loved it. Landing was the best part. Our trip to NASA taught me about how technology allows the astronauts to eat the same food we have on Earth, like freeze dried ice cream. I also thought it was neat how they make sure the astronauts are safe in space. The Rockin' Roller coaster, at Disney Hollywood Studios, was my first upside down roller coaster. It was electrifying.
Kelsey Schmehl (8th grade): I learned that I have goals that I know I can achieve. There are other people in the world that need our help and that we have the power to help them.
Lizzie Adams (7th grade): I enjoyed exploring the different cultures at Epcot. The food and language spoke by the employees reflected the countries and cultures. At Kennedy Space Center, we went inside a flight simulator and they showed us what it felt like to take off in the Space Shuttle. My favorite ride was the Rockin' Roller Coaster, at Disney Hollywood Studios.
Graciela Flores (7th grade): I learned that we can all communicate better with our leadership skills learned in FCCLA. I feel more comfortable speaking to other people then before this trip. I met people from different states and all over parts of Texas.
Cassidy Miller (8th grade): I learned that compromising is a must to make the day enjoyable and fun. You can't always do what you want. You have to consider everyone's thoughts and feelings.
Lorena Lizardo (8th grade): The buddy system helps you find your way. No matter what you are doing, have fun. You need to try new things.
Alyssa Wade (7th grade): I liked Disney's Animal Kingdom. We went through a program called Wild Life Discovery. We went to specific stations in each area of the park. Each station taught us facts about animals, bugs, nature, and dinosaurs. I learned things that I did not know in a really fun way.
Ivy Albright (9th grade): I learned that change affects the world from Judson Laipply, the speaker in the first general session. One speaker from Microsoft talked about technology changes and how one day a computer could be smarter than the human brain. I liked meeting people from different states when we traded pins. This is my last trip with Granger FCCLA and I realize that friends mean everything. I could not have done this without them. They are there for the good times and bad.
Alex Reed (9th grade): To be a good leader, you have to learn how to relate to people of different ages and cultures. You can't always control what you do with the people you are around. You learn the times when to agree and disagree. One of the speakers, Judson Laipply, talked about things I could relate to: my life, FCCLA, and competition.
Charly Owen (9th grade): Airplane toilets were frightening. I do not like them. I would not like a job that requires travelling. I learned how much my family means to me because I missed them. The Hulk, at Universal Studios, was my first upside down roller coaster ride. It was awesome!
Cameron Langley (7th grade): At a workshop we attended, we learned that underage drinking can mess up your brain. Disney World is not just for little kids. Going in before competition, we were quite nervous, but we brought home a GOLD.
Jake Miller (8th grade): First impressions are three seconds long. To change that impression takes 30 seconds. I learned that Universal Studios has great rides. Rides shut down when there is lightening for our safety.
Emory Sutton (7th grade): Disney World is huge. We rode the flight simulator at NASA. It shook a lot. Ushering at the Spotlight on Projects, we learned about community service projects from chapters across the nation.
Cameron Schneider (10th grade): At the USA Officer Training Workshop, I learned to solve a problem by not just looking at the obvious solution, but consider there might be other solutions. I learned to develop friendships quickly. I also learned a lot of facts at Disney, NASA, and Universal. I also enjoyed the Gala. Being a voting delegate taught me a lot about the political system.
Jessica Curtis (10th grade): I learned how to communicate better with adults. This is a skill that I can use with other organizations that I am a member. I learned to cooperate and compromise with my peers. This was my first National Meeting and it is huge. There are a lot of early mornings, late nights, and living out of a suitcase. I had the opportunity to get closer to my fellow region and state officers.
Kirk Dunn (7th grade): I like roller coasters. Meeting new people is awesome. Many skills can be used on many jobs.
