Granger Going to State UIL Meet in Austin

April 24, 2008

Academic UIL

-         First off, as UIL coordinator, I would like to express my appreciation for all of the UIL coaches (all grades) who contributed extra time and effort on behalf of our students. I also want to send a very special “Thank You” to Jimmie Baker, who was very instrumental in helping the UIL program accomplish what we did. I also would like to express my appreciation for the student’s participation, and our satisfaction and pride in how they practiced and performed. Last, but not least, I would like to thank the parents for promoting the participation of their children.

-         On Friday, April 11, 2008, Granger ISD sent 4 students (Kim Jones, Daniel Graves, Garrett Pekar, and Jenny Pavelka) to compete at the Regional Academic UIL Meet in Brenham. Their coaches were Jimmie Baker, Cynthia Butler, and Michelle Bassett.

-         On Friday and Saturday, May 2 & 3, 2008, Granger ISD will send Garrett Pekar and Daniel Graves to compete at the State Academic UIL Meet at UT-Austin. Garrett Pekar will compete in Headline Writing, and Daniel Graves will compete in Spelling.

-         Overall, UIL has had a great year. The elementary and junior high students and coaches also worked extremely hard. We were very pleased and proud of the number of students that we had place, especially in 1st-3rd place. As a reward for their participation and dedication, the junior high students were taken to Austin Parks and Pizza for a day full of pizza, games, and other fun activities. The elementary participants will also be rewarded for their efforts, as will the high school participants. Again, we are very proud of our students, and I am very grateful for those teachers who were willing to dedicate their time to helping students achieve in Academic UIL. We are looking forward to an even better year in 2008-2009, and will continue to strive for improvement and excellence.
