Helpful Hints on How to Prevent Staphylococcus Infections

 

Staphylococcal (staph) infections usually occur on the skin.  It can cause sores that may cause pus.  ANYONE with a sore that is draining pus can pass the infection on to another person.  It is important to get medicine for these sores.  Only medicine will stop the sore from spreading.  Correct hand washing and not sharing bathroom items will HELP to stop the spread.

 

 

DO

 

        Keep toilet, shower, and sink clean

        Keep sores that are draining pus covered with a proper dressing

        Take a shower every day

        Uniforms, knee-pads, elbow pads and any other articles of clothing should be laundered in hot water after any game or practice

        Clean laundry should not be placed in the same bag/bins that dirty laundry was previously placed in.

        Either wash hands for 30 seconds using soap or use alcohol-based sanitizers

Before and after touching a sore

Before eating

After exercising

After using the bathroom

 

 

 

 

DO NOT

 

        Don't Share towels, Razors, Soap, Deodorant, Ointments or Antibiotics, or Personal items

        Don't use Exercise Equipment if you have a sore

        Don't “POP” or Open Sores

        Don't stop taking medication given to you by the doctor even if the infection has healed finish the all of the antibiotic

        Avoidcontact with other people’s wounds and lesions

        Don't use a dirty towel to dry your hands after you have cleaned them.

        Don't forget to change your dressing at least twice a day or more frequently if drainage becomes apparent
